The rapper Drake also makes it onto the album with the track “Un-thinkable (I’m Ready),” but his additions are an afterthought to Keys’ feature vocals. She doesn’t need a recording program to sing to a key and if the emotion she applies to each song involves the occasional wavering of pitch, then so be it. Not only does this add an extra touch of soul to her songs, but it solidifies her status as being one of the best. In an era where Auto-Tune rules the recording world and anyone can sing perfectly in any key with a little digital help, one thing that becomes instantly noticeable in Alicia Keys’ voice are slight imperfections. Earlier this year she also shared the spotlight with Jay-Z for one of the biggest hip-hop tracks of the year, “Empire State of Mind.” She brings the track back for a solo rendition to close out The Element of Freedom which will no doubt delight anyone who doesn’t care for Jay-Z.
