In fact, you will most likely only hear this EP in places where new vinyl is sold. Animal Collective is unlikely to receive a great deal of radio play with this release. A carnival of sounds fills the ears to the point of near confusion, but hidden in the chaos are brilliant melodies that only blossom after multiple listens. Instrumentation furnishing the complete frequency spectrum provides colorful paint to the band’s rhythmic canvas.

“Graze” opens the EP with a true test of the human ear. Intricate rhythmic patterns, unique vocal harmonies, and heavy reverb provide the framework for these five tracks with each song flowing into the next as if to suggest five movements to the same song. Fall Be Kind picks up right where Merriweather Post Pavilion leaves off.

With her superstar status, it’s obvious she has been given more creative freedom with her work which makes it as enjoyable to listen to as I’m sure she enjoyed making it. The Element of Freedom, Keys’ fourth album, is a great addition to her already impressive discography. Bass and the occasional cymbal crash mix in until the last thirty seconds of the song where drums, and background vocals fill the final chorus with the perfect finale to the album. Adding more emotion to the song is the new instrumentation which is stripped down completely at the beginning to just piano and Alicia singing (Keys and keys). In “Empire State of Mind (Part II) Broken Down,” Alicia Keys maintains the soulful chorus that originally made the song memorable, but provides her own spin on the verses. The rapper Drake also makes it onto the album with the track “Un-thinkable (I’m Ready),” but his additions are an afterthought to Keys’ feature vocals. Beyonce makes it onto the track “Put It In A Love Song,” but instead of featuring the guest, the song is a duet of two of the decade’s most celebrated divas. This is most easily heard on the track “Doesn’t Mean Anything.” Most R&B artists lean on collaborations these days as well and once again, The Element of Freedom breaks the current mold by believing in the star power of the individual artist. She doesn’t need a recording program to sing to a key and if the emotion she applies to each song involves the occasional wavering of pitch, then so be it. Not only does this add an extra touch of soul to her songs, but it solidifies her status as being one of the best. In an era where Auto-Tune rules the recording world and anyone can sing perfectly in any key with a little digital help, one thing that becomes instantly noticeable in Alicia Keys’ voice are slight imperfections. Earlier this year she also shared the spotlight with Jay-Z for one of the biggest hip-hop tracks of the year, “Empire State of Mind.” She brings the track back for a solo rendition to close out The Element of Freedom which will no doubt delight anyone who doesn’t care for Jay-Z. In 2008, Keys married her boyfriend and record producer Kerry “Krucial” Brothers who shares writing credits on nearly half of the tracks on The Element of Freedom.
